The Interview Process

We partner with individuals, families, communities, and institutions to record oral histories with video and audio. Typically lasting 1-8 hours, clients are guided chronologically through a series of questions about their life and experiences, their values, and their reflections, giving them an opportunity to add their stories to the historic record.

Our process is designed to ensure your experience is smooth, enjoyable, and meaningful:

Step 1: Interview Prep

In advance of the interview, we will first meet to discuss your goals, learn about your story, and review how the interview will be structured.

You will then receive a draft of the list of questions or topics in advance to help you prepare. In reviewing the outline, you can let me know which topics are missing that you want to discuss in the interview, as well as which topics should be avoided.

Step 2: The Interview

Interviews are conducted on video with professional equipment, capturing both high quality audio and visuals.

You will share your story at your own pace with guidance from thoughtful, open-ended questions.

Family or friends can be present for support, with your permission.

Step 3: Review, Editing, and Delivery

After the interview, you will receive a copy of the recording to review.

You can request edits and ask me to remove anything you do not want in the final version.

I will deliver a final copy of the interview via a file transfer service. You may also request a DVD, USB flash drive, and/or a digital and printed transcript for an additional fee.

Preservation Options

We offer flexibility to meet your needs:

In-Person or Remote Interviews: While in-person interviews are preferred, we offer remote options to ensure everyone can participate, no matter where they are.

Archival Donations: Decide whether your oral history will be shared with a library, museum, or historical society. We will respect your privacy and honor any restrictions you request regarding public access.
